Tamarind Cooking Experience - Market

So we've been through this market thing on more than one occasion, however, this is one is little more special...this is the Traditional Laos Cooking Course we did today, and they took us to the market where they buy all their fresh produce for the cooking school as well as for their restaurant.
Most of these photos are colourful and show how the market is set out....its pretty cool...

Aubergine - we used both the round and long today in the class.

Fresh fruit - banana's are sold from green right through to almost rotten...apparently they are used for different things.

The baskets the Laotian people steam rice in.

This is water buffalo skin...they put it in the food for flavour...I know what you are thinking...yes we cooked with it and yes I ate it!

This is water buffalo lung - its crunchy...a bit like crackling I suppose! These people really don't let any part of the animal go to waste!

This was a first for me...pink eggs...why don't we get them in South Africa?

Glorious mushrooms in baskets all over the market.

Magnificent colours...limes, aubergines, tomatoes in huge piles.

I'm not sure what these are, but they're pretty!

Chillies everywhere, raw, dried, ground, mixed...

Limes marvelous limes...in Laos, Coriander, spring onions and limes are used in almost everything.

Limes, beans and chillies. They use these beans in curries and stews.

More aubergines...the colours are just fabulous.

Garlic by the kilo - the chef said that after today and all the garlic we used there would be no kissing! We figured that if we both ate it, it cancels out!

Now this is revolting. They find these poor, darling little frogs in the crops when they are picking and they come and sell them at the market...they eat a lot of frogs here...it must be the French Colonial influence.

Buckets of catfish - they look more like eels.

Spices! they also make these really nice peanuts here. They are salted with crunchy slices of garlic in it...very tasty!

Magnificent colours

This is where the market starts getting nasty...the meat section...yes these are pigs heads.

Yes this is a chicken - how they bend them like that I don't know. It looks like they are doing yoga!!!

Piles of meat...very disturbing and it takes a little while to get your head around it.

Lovely peppers - they often hollow them out, stuff them with chicken and coriander and spring onions and cook them on an open fire.

Oyster mushrooms - absolutely delicious.

What a happy face! I'd also look like that if I had to shred bamboo everyday!

Believe it or not, these are litchis and they are actually very very nice!

With the market over and done with...we then went to the cooking school to learn to cook Laos food....
